delegate setup problem

I am trying add a delegate under the Exchange mailbox by
clicking "Add". When I enter a username/alias for the
delegate, I get a response that says "There was an error
communicating with the directory server." This is strange
as I have check name working and I can go to directoy
services and search AD fine.

I know the permissions are correct, because I do get
email meeting requests for the principal.

Any ideas?
