I recently signed up for this newsgroup. The program downloaded five
hundred messages. That's O.K., but, how do I delete all of those messages
from the folder? I do not seem to have an active button for either delete
or cut.

You don't. News works differently to mail. Entourage keeps your local folder
in sync with the news server. When messages are 'rotated off' the server
they will also disappear from entourage. How long this tales depends on the
newsgroup, but here it seems to be about 2 months.

If you no longer want to subscribe to the newsgroup, you can clear the local
cache for all groups on a server by control-clicking on the server icon in
the folder listing and choosing 'empty cache' from the contextual menu. This
will empty the cache for all groups on that server. There is no way to do
this for individual groups at this time.

In Tools | Accounts, Edit Microsoft News Server, select Options, you can
also tell Entourage how many new messages to download when you connect to a
group. You don't have to download 500 every time you haven't checked into a
group for a while, or after clearing the server cache.

You can remove individual messages from the listing though using a rule,
which is especially useful if they contain offensive content. Go to Tools >
Rules, click the "News" tab, and click "New". Create a rule that looks like
this:
Name: Do not show messages
*Execute if any criteria are met
IF All Messages
THEN Do not show article

Make sure the "Enabled" checkbox remains unchecked. Now, you can select and
remove items by going to Message > Apply Rule > Do not show messages.

This works to 'hide' the messages, but doesn't really 'delete' them. They
are still there and accessible if you want to get at them.
