Deleted items will not empty

There are over 500 deleted items in my deleted items folder that will not go
away. I do not want to throw away preferences, cause then I have to set the
whole mess back up again. What is going on? Anyone know how to fix?

Try a database Rebuild - first Typical the Advanced (though you may need
Advanced). Hold down Option key at launch.

I'm assuming this is your local (On My Computer) Deleted Items folder. If
it's an IMAP Deleted Items folder, make sure that in Tools/Accounts/that
account, you have the IMAP Deleted Items folder set up on Advanced page for
your deleted messages, and that you have it set to purge messages on quit.
