Deleted/Old emails reload in the 1000's

Whenever I empty my Deleted Items folder, my scheduler stops working. I resume the scheduler to Send and Receive all..Entourage then reloads over 3000 deleted emails and duplicate emails.

What is this and how do I resolve thsi issue?

Go to Tools --> Accounts... and double-click your POP account to edit it.

Under Options, you may want to deselect "Leave a copy of each message on
the server". Or you may want to delete them after fewer days. If
necessary, click the button to download all messages from the server and
delete what's already there.
