deleted, unread msgs still appear in XP login

I intentionally deleted some unread email and emptied the
Deleted items folder. However, my WinXP login continues to
state that I have n unread msgs.

How can I get XP to 'realize' these emails are long gone?

Outlook does not update the Windows XP Welcome Screen mail count. If you
have a .NET Passport and have not disabled Windows Messenger or if you use
Outlook Express, then that's where the count is coming from. See
