Demo key question

Hi

I have Student Edition 2003 installed on my computer and it says I can
install it on up to 3 computers.

I have just been given an old laptop but I'm not sure how stable it is or if
it will last.
I don't want to waste one of my 2 remaining installs on a laptop I might not
be able to use. (technically it should be good enough for 2003)

If I were to install the demo version of 2003, would it later accept my
product key and let me continue using it? Or can the demo only be converted
by a brand new product key?

It would really help if I could test it this way for a lttle while before I
commit to having it on permanantely

thanks

You are free to install your version, then uninstall if no good.
The three installations refers to three current installations, not the
number of times you have installed (tried)

Really!?

I'm sure I read somewhere that MS keep track of how many times it has been
installed?

I was worried a while back about reinstalling Office when reinstalling
Windows and I'm sure I read that MS keep track of the the computer hardware
to make sure you don't put it on more than 3 computers in the products
lifetime.

Is that wrong?

Wrong
Licence allows for 3 *current* installations, NOT 3 installs only.
MS does keep track of online activation - depending on timescale between
activations. If on line activation fails use phone method and explain.
