DESPERATE to rebuild database!

PLease help me!
Suddenly my entourage os X program crashed and told me to rebuild my
database.
I have spent an entire day trying to figure out how to do this. I have
ample room on my Hard disk to duplicate the file in the rebuilding
process but everytime I begin to rebuild by launching the program while
holding down the option key.... it thinks a long time and then shuts
down after about 5 minutes.

My "database" file located in the "microsoft user data" file under
"office X identities" is very very large!
It is 2.86 GB! I have no idea how it got so big. Maybe because I am a
graphic designer and use email sending large files. Is this size file
normal?
I am so so so nervous that I have lost all my contacts and mail.

Thank you to anyone that can help!

Press the alt key as you launch the app. You should then see a pane with
various options offering you to rebuild the database.

Corentin,
Thanks for your reply but I have done this numerous times and it starts
to work and then entourage quits again.

I am going to try the advanced rebuild after I back up the database in
case it gets further damaged.

Your existing database will not be touched - the first stage of the rebuild
process is to make a copy and work on the copy.

After the rebuild finishes, you will have a backup of the old database in
the identities folder that you can manually delete.

Reading the original message, bazos is on Entourage X, and has a
database that is 2.63 GB. While Entourage 2001 had a limit of 2 GB,
Entourage X's limit is 4 GB. So there should be no problem regarding
the file size.

However, the report seems to be that the rebuild dies after 5 minutes
without completing. Erin: You say "it thinks a long time and then shuts
down after about 5 minutes." Is there an error message? Does it
"Unexpectedly quit"? What exactly happens after five minutes?

I just did this today. I held down the option key and restarted th
Entourage program. It brings up a box with choices. Choose the rebuil
option It only takes a minute or so and it's all fixed! :

Only if s/he had SR1 (v10.1) or later. If s/he has not done so s/he should
update to Office 10.1.65 from MacTopia immediately.

That was trying a so-called "Typical" rebuild, it seems (this is X). That's
really just a compacting that won't fix genuine database corruption. An
"Advanced" rebuild is necessary, and should work.
