destination folder cannot be found.

I recently upgraded to Entourage 2008 (Mac Pro G5 running OS 10.4.11). I have a Rule that sends messages from a discussion list to a separate folder. It seemed it wasn't working just after the update, I got "The message could not be filed because the destination folder cannot be found." So I created a new destination folder and edited the Rule to move the messages to that one. Well, it is partly successful, but there are still some messages that create the error - when I check the trigger address, it is the same on both the successful and failed messages. The message seems to point to the destination folder as being the problem. Any ideas of things I could try? Thanks. - Paul

It is a known issue that some people upgrading to Entourage 2008 needed to
edit and re-save their rules. If you're still having trouble, I'd proffer
that there is *another* rule giving you the error. Your best bet is to go
through all of your rules and mailing list entries and edit and re-save all
of them.

But.... Mailing List Manager rules run before other rules. My guess is a
problem in the database. You could try rebuilding, but you might have to end
up starting with a new Identity and manually bringing over your mail. There
is something hinky (excuse the technical term :) )in some imported
databases. Rules failing is not the usual symptom, but something is
definitely wrong with how Entourage is seeing folder IDs. That makes me
think database corruption.

1. Create a backup copy of your database.

2. Rebuild your database. How to rebuild:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/rebuild.html>

3. After successful rebuild, recheck your Mailing List Manager rules and
custom rules for folder destination.

4. If the rebuild fails, you have the backup copy that will still open. Use
this to manually export your data. For directions see:

I'm looking at this post and scratching my head. I'm getting the same message but I've only ever used entourage 2008. I've been on a webmail service prior. So rebuilding my database seems a bit overkill given that I've just installed entourage 4 days ago.

What's worse I haven't got *any* rules, let alone, mailing list manager rules, listed in my rules area.

So far this morning, I've got 9 emails from the one person all giving me the error message progati has described. And yesterday I had messages from around 6 different senders with the same error.

My error description tells me I've got an "untitled" mailing list rule, but I can't see any rules in the list. And a destination folder that cannot be found??? I'm totally lost.

If you don't have ANY rules, try quitting Entourage, removing the Rules file
from your Identity folder, and relaunching Entourage. That should cause
Entourage to create a new Rules file, which MIGHT fix your problem.

Just an update. I have rebuilt my database, with no improvement. Then I deleted my Rules file (as suggested above) and created new rules. Mysteriously, a recent Error description reads "While processing... the mailing list rule "Untitled" could not be successfully executed... the destination folder cannot be found." What I am focusing on is mailing list rule "Untitled". In my Rules tabs I only see the two new Rules I created for my Exchange account. So where is "Untitled" hiding? - Paul

Look under Tools > Mailing List Manager (that's where "mailing list rules"
are managed).

Thank you Mickey. Even though Diane mentioned it I didn't know what I was looking for. I found "Untitled" there and also discovered that, under Advanced, the default setting is "Do not apply rules to list messages".

So my description of what happened is Entourage 2008 automatically created a rule "Untitled", pointing to an unusable folder, for a mailing list I was subscribed to, that cancelled out the Rules I had been using in Entourage 2004 or any new ones I created. Since I was unfamiliar with Mailing List Rules, I kept beating at the other "Rules". I'm convinced this is the fix, but I'll be back if the behavior persists.

Thank you all very much. - Paul
