DFS and open/save as dialog boxes

We have all our data on DFS shares. Word, excel etc do not remember the
last open or save as location when browsing to DFS shares.
Also the up one level button always gives me the error message:
You do not have access to the folder- \\domain\share
Even when I've come through the folder.

Any ideas?
