I frequently send MS Word documents to clients who also have Word, but
perhaps not the exact same version as mine (MS Word 2002 XP). By the time
they receive my perfect document via e-mail, the program has maliciously
substituted new characters throughout the document. For example: "Sell
William's shares." becomes "Sell William=s shares." That's the tip of the
iceberg. By the time I'm done walking the recipient through the corrections,
I may as well have chiseled my document on a stone and rolled it across state
to the recipient. I'm always thrilled when a client prefers WordPerfect, as
I never have any problems at all creating and sending WordPerfect documents.

It's disturbing to me that the only updates for MS Office products seem to
be "security related." It gives the impression that Microsoft feels that
their programs have no bugs to fix... Far from it.

If an = is being substituted for an apostrophe, it's possible that you are
inadvertently using the WordPerfect Typographic Symbols font for the
apostrophes; this is quite likely if the text is a legacy from a WP
document. When a user who doesn't have this font installed opens your
document, the apostrophe (character 61 in the WP font) becomes = (ASCII
character 61 in normal text fonts). No malice involved.
