disable one note custom flags

I am using OneNote 2003. I customized several note flags, but no longer use
them and don't want them listed in the note flag tool bar. I can reset them
to their original icon, but when I try to define them as 'Undefined' (so they
will disappear) from the toolbar), I'm told that that name is already in use.
How do I get rid of these?

You can't unfortunately in 2003. You have a few workarounds:

1) If you want to start from scratch, close ON and delete the file C:
\Documents and Settings\{yourname}\Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote>
Preferences.dat This will remove all customized Note Flags (and some
other settings - check all settings under Tools | Options to verify
things are still set the way you want), but will let you restart from
scratch and redefine the Flags you had set before. Notes which had the
now-deleted Flags applied to them will still have those old flags
applied, so you could use the Notes Flag Summary screen as a listing of
the old flags you need to recreate.

2) Less of a scortched earth approach is to revert the settings of these
unwanted flags to the default (no symbol, no color, no highlight, etc.)
and rename them to " undefined", " undefined", " undefined" (note the
different number of spaces which precedes the names) and then change the
display order so that they are displayed towards the bottom of the list.
When you need another Flag defined, reuse these first.

There are pros and cons to each approach. This is improved in ON2007,
where you can just remove a Tag/Note Flag you no longer need.
