Disabling spell features

I sometimes send emails in languages other than English. And when I do funny
things happen that I wish wouldn't. For example: I sometimes need the word
f-o-r-a (without the hyphens--I can't even type it out correctly to show
you) but the built in speller or whatever immediately changes the word to
"f-o-r a", that is to say, a space appears automatically between the r and
the a creating 2 words "for a" instead of f-o-r-a. How can I stop this from
happening.

Another thing I would like to change is the obligatory capital letter after
a period. I frequently abbreviate words using a period and don't want a
capital letter afterwards.

There must be a place where these settings can be configured to one's taste.
Please tell me where it is.

Thanks,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

This is the AutoCorrect function, which can be very useful. It's under
Tools, but the master list of words that get changed is actually kept in
Word, and Entourage just refers to it. Play with all the options under the
Tools | AutoCorrect menu in Word (and in Entourage), particularly the
entries in the AutoCorrect list. It will solve your fora problem and the
period problem (you can set exceptions if you want to retain partial
auto-capitalization).

By the way, instead of abbreviating words with a period, you could set
AutoCorrect to automatically replace the entire word when you type your
abbreviation. Also, hitting apple-z (command-z) will undo the correction
just made, for occasional use.

But, Entourage also has a Change Dictionary command under Tools....it's
possible that if you change the Dictionary for your non-English emails, it
will stop all this activity triggering at all. See if Help tells you any
more about that option, have never used it myself.

Thanks for your reply. I already found the Auto Correct tool in Word. So how
exactly would I set up f-o-r-a to be activated as a word in Auto Correct. I
still don't know how to do that.

Thanks again.

It's the other way around, you need to de-activate "fora" changing to "for
a" so that you can type it as you like. In Word, Tools | AutoCorrect, there
is a long list of words with their replacements. Scroll down it until you
find "fora" and select and delete the entry telling Word/Entourage to
replace it with "for a". (if you start typing "for" in the Replace: box,
it will scroll the list for you).
