disappearing emails!

I've swapped from using Mail to Entourage 2004 for the Mac, due to Mail
always asking for passwords. Entourage seemed to be working fine, but
over the last couple of days when I switch to IMAP folders (from my
personal account, a business account and my wifes account) the emails
are there for a second and then disappear. They are not moving
themselves to the deleted folder and I cannot find them in any other
folder - please help!

Have you got 'unread only' selected under the view menu?

Hi Barry

Thanks for the reply

Unfortunatley this isn't the answer
I've tried again today and on opening my personal folder (I had 3
emails which I hadn't opened - but had been there since yesterday) they
were still there and then........ gone!

At the moment I can still collect my emails from my PC but I'm trying
to move away from it

any more ideas?

From what you describe, it sounds like some other system is accessing the
mails on the IMAP server. They display briefly because they are held in the
local cache in Entourage, but when the local cache is updated from the
server, messages removed from the server will be removed from the cache.

Are you sure your windows setup is not filtering the mails to some other
mail folder at regular intervals?

I'm only using the PC as a back up for my photo archive, so Outlook
isn't on - I'm assuming is should have no effect on my emails.

I have read on other forum sites today, that this may be a significant
bug within the program.
The problem only seems to have occured since I conntected the powerbook
to the PC via a DLink hub and ethernet connection - although today it
seems to have happened on my wireless network - with nothing connected.

Not sure if I have the same problem as you. The Inbox and Drafts folder
windows when opened in the main Entourage window have suddenly become greyed
out and the messages that were there are invisible. I think they are still
there (partly because the unsent drafts are revealed as 3 in bold in the
folder menu on the left) and because I can export the inbox by dragging the
Inbox icon off the window into the Finder where it creates an Inbox mbox
file.

When I try to select all or perform other functions with the Inbox open I
get a repeated error message "Mail error. Cannot complete the operation.
This repeats until a crash or forced quit.

I think it may be due to corruption of the email message file data which is
preventing Entourage from locating the right data. But that's only a guess.

It happened to me once before with messages in a separate message folder I
had created. I was able to solve the problem by exporting the messages in
that folder to the finder, then deleting the whole folder including the
messages and re-importing the messages again into a new folder. I can't do
that with the Inbox - its not deletable.

I am proposing to "re-install" Entourage but I am having trouble knowing how
to do that. I think the best way is to export all your messages to the
finder as messages (using select all, drag and drop to named folders created
for this purpose) then delete the database in the users folder. Not sure if
this helps.

Any help from anyone much appreciated.

Hi Nick

It doesn't sound like the same problem. All my folders were still
active and I have had cases were a small selection of emails have
disappeared completely and others in the same folders have stayed. It
is very annoying to lose emails but as far as I'm aware I haven't lost
anything important, but as a footnote I have gone back to the Mail
program on my powerbook and have adjusted the settings to recieve every
15 mins rather every couple - and out of interest it hasn't lost the
password (which is what caused me to switch in the first place ) at all
for a couple of days

I'm very new to the world of Macs but I had a problem installing
Photoshop - I spoke to their technical help line and found out that due
to the firewall and anti virus system on my powerbook, the whole
program did not load although it would still work. They suggested
uninstalling and reinstalling the program in safe mode, which I did and
Bingo!! it has worked fine since.

Try rebuilding the database. In Entourage X, first go to Entourage -> Turn
Off Office Notifications. Now, quit Entourage, and then restart Entourage
holding down the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog box comes up, choose
to do a Typical Rebuild. If that does not fix the problem, repeat the
procedure, instead opting to do the Advanced Rebuild.

I have been having a similar problem:

I am using Entourage X on a G5:

Today when I opened Entourage ALL of my emails in my inbox, sent,
deleted and trash were gone completely. Also all my addresses/contacts
were gone.

I went to the Microsoft site and did the "rebuild" thing to rebuild the
database. That didn't do anything, so I tried the "advanced rebuild"
with the same result.

I also checked the trash.... nothing in there looking like email
messages or databases. I have no idea where else to look or what else
to try.

I'm pretty upset since I really need my emails and addresses. Some of
the addresses are nowhere else, only in the emails.

A related topic would be, how do I back up my emails and addresses?

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, CJ
