Bill,
Of course, you're right that Entourage is not a port of Outlook. But when MS
replaced Outlook for Mac with Entourage, didn't they realize that customers
wanted/expected an application with the same features as Outlook?
Hi Ed!
I know this is like picking nits but Microsoft never replaced Outlook
with Entourage. Both existed at one time as separate products and are
still considered separate products.
Outlook 2001 was the last Mac OS 9 compatible version of Outlook for Mac
and was discontinued by the Exchange Server team, who had contracted its
development. Entourage was introduced by the Macintosh Business Unit as
part of Office 2001.
A year or two later when the Exchange Server folks announced their
discontinuation of Outlook for Mac, nothing existed to support Macintosh
users on Mac OS X. The Macintosh Business unit decided to include
Exchange Support in Entourage in an update to Office X, which was the
first Mac OS X version of Office.
While many folks would like to blame "Microsoft" for not building in
full Exchange support into Entourage to date, the fact is that the MacBU
is picking up where the Exchange Server group dropped support. Yes,
Microsoft is all one company but anyone familiar with large corporations
can understand that they are really groups of different business units
that each have their own leadership, goals and finances.
Have a look at my blog post from last May on The Entourage Help Blog for

I'm not trying to sway your opinion one way or the other. Just trying to
give you the history of "why" and "how".
Hope this helps!
