Do I need additional software for calls?

I would like to utilize calling from my computer. Do I need any special
software. I can see that as I follow the steps below, it dials my number and
works fine, but I assume I need a mic or headset. I do have a headset but
not sure how all this works.

Thanks.

1.. Click Contacts .
2.. Click the contact you want to call.
3.. On the Actions menu, point to Call Contact, and then click the phone
number you want to dial.
4.. Click Start Call.
5.. Pick up the phone handset, and then begin your conversation.
6.. Click End Call, and then hang up the phone.

Your modem usually comes with software that will allow you to make calls. I
do not know of a way to make calls without a modem...

If you are using Outlook in this call, you must physically pick up the
handset to talk. Then I believe you can use the headset but the receiver
must be picked up first.

| Thank you for your post. I do understand what you have said below. I
| would like to understand how I hear my calls and how I talk. I have
| the headset and I dial the number but I don't hear anything.
|
| I tried dialing myself today and my phone rings so I know it works. I
| tried plugging in the headset which has a mic on it but I didn't hear
| anything and couldn't talk through it either. Trying to determine how
| it would be plugged into the computer or if it needs special software
| in order to work.

Thanks so much Milly. I don't have a phone hooked into my computer but
rather the line straight into the jack so I will try this out with a phone.
