Dock and pop-up notifications

The dock email and popup pane doesn¹t work even though I¹ve got ³Display an
alert on my desktop² set in preferences. Any idea why and how to correct it?

Not sure what you mean by 'dock email...'?

The 'display alert on my desktop' setting should put a short summary of the
message in a tiny blue floating window as the mail arrives, but the window
fades away after a few seconds. However, this global setting can be
over-ridden with the 'notification' setting in mail rules.

Thank you for your reply. Part of the solution is knowing how to phrase the
question. By "Dock email" I mean do the number of emails received appear
above the Entourage icon in the dock similar to Apple's mail app when the
computer is permanently connected to the internet? The "Floating Pane"
effect that I was wanting worked after a reinstall of Office
