document is locked

In Word 2003 I get the message"this modification not
allowed because document is locked". No subdocs have been
intentially established. The knowledge base calls to go
to the insert menu and then comments. Almost everything
on this menu is grayed out so I have no access.Curser in
doc doesn't help. I'm stuck. No new or existing docs
will open. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like the documents is protected. Have you tried tools>unprotect document
