Does anyone from Microsoft actually 'work' this group?

Diane Ross

I see scores of important issues and questions going unanswered.

What's up?

This is a newsgroup. It's not an official MSFT support site. Currently, some
of the MSFT developers are answering some questions, but they are not
normally seen on the newsgroup.

As to way so many are going unanswered by the volunteers on this list, you
can blame the new Mactopia interface. Most people use a newsreader like the
one Entourage includes to access this NNTP group. The new web interface
totally destroyed the functions of a newsreader making it so difficult for
us to help we just gave up waiting on fixes to the interface. They are
currently making changes and things will hopefully improve.

If you want to know what we were seeing, I'll list a few of our complaints.

Font too small to read. NNTP is supposed to be plain text.

Replies were not included so we had no idea what the original questions was
or what was suggested and tried.

Messages like "that worked" were useless. We had no idea what worked as
there was no way to link it to the original question.

Subject should indicate the problem. No one is paid here to answer
questions. We often scan the subjects for questions we know we can answer so
if the subject is clear, then someone will be more likely to respond. We are
busy and don't have time to try tracking down or opening each message to see
what the actual topic is about.

No indication was given as to what version of Office they were using or what
OS. It matters because different version have different solutions. Leopard
has it's own set of problems so OS matters.

How to subscribe to the Microsoft Entourage newsgroup using Entourage or any
newsreader.

As somebody who subscribes to the newsgroup daily, the increase in
traffic -- mainly generated by officeformac.com since the release of
Office 2008 -- is massive and the VOLUNTEERS hanging around here are
doing a great job to cope.

Sorry, dude, but if you want guaranteed support, you're going to have to
pay for it. And before you say 'But I paid for Office', you only paid
for a license to the application. You don't get unlimited support for
your mac from Apple either without stumping up for something like
AppleCare. Of course, if you *did* pay for support too, then get on the
phone to Microsoft.

The people like me or Diane who respond to questions here are users like
you. We have other occupations; this isn't our job. This is not a direct
line to Microsoft. So sometimes, you have to be patient until someone
knowledgeable comes along and can help you. Or, as Jon says, call Microsoft
and pay for support.
