does anyone know why some contacts have an astrix

I have some contacts in Outlook that are also MSN contacts. Sometimes when
emailing them there is and astrix (*) next to their name when listed in the
to field. I thought this was related to them being on and offline, but now a
particular contact does not show the astrix when online, so that blows that
theory. Can anyone illuminate me as to why this happens?
