does entourage 2004 support task SUBFOLDERS?

I

incogenator

i can't seem to find anything on the above question. i refer specifally
to locally (on my computer) stored tasks. there only seems be a mail
subfolder option but otherwise that option is grayed out when it comes
to tasks.

btw- i know that entourage does not provide MS Exchange support for
tasks (or notes).

thanks in advance.

No, it doesn't. To see this feature in a future version of Entourage, be
sure to send feedback to Microsoft. In Entourage X or 2004, go to Help >
Send Feedback on Entourage. Otherwise, click on this direct link to enter
Mac Product Feedback:
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default.aspx?pid=feedback>

Note that you can create Custom Views to display subsets of tasks based on
criteria you select. Clicking the "Tasks" button in the Views list will
show a list of all tasks.

thanks Mickey -

I find it quite strange that such a basic requirement is not available
in entourage. are they intentionally doing it for some reason? the
functionality, i assume, exists in almost all email applications.

i will do as recommended and send them a note about it. honestly, what
i hope they will really do is integrate full exhange/outlook
functionality (without the windows bugs of course) especially for tasks
and notes.

thanks again

Actually, Mickey was a bit general. You may not have realized what he was
hinting at by referring to custom views. You can get them to work exactly as
subfolders:

You can do what you're looking for, as long as you don't think of it as a
"folder". Why should tasks be in a "folder" or "subfolder", just because
Outlook Windows does it that way?

What you really want is to be able to keep separate sets of tasks, right? In
Outlook you do it by subfolders, you Entourage do it this way:

First, create categories of the same names as you would have made for the
subfolders (e.g. "SubTasks 1", "SubTasks 2", etc.). You do that in
Edit/Categories/Edit Categories.

Now make new custom views, one for each of these task categories. You do
that in Mew/Custom View. For each one, give it the same name as one of those
new categories (e.g. "SubTasks 1", "SubTasks 2", etc.). set

Item Types: ˆ Tasks [only]

and set the criterion to be:

<Category> <Is > <SubTasks 1>

with the appropriate category name for this custom view. Make sure that you
select ONLY Tasks as Item Type.

You will now find all these new Task Views listed in the left column of the
Tasks area of Entourage. Just like subfolders. EXACTLY like subfolders.

Now, when you want to make a new task (or "move" an old one to one of these
Task Views), assign it "SubTask 1" or "SubTask 2" category as appropriate.
It does not have to be the only category - it doesn't even have to be the
primary category displaying the color. You can set whatever categories you
want (you can fiddle with the popup list by clicking the Categories column
for the task - the last one you choose will become the primary category -
but if there's more than one category it's easier to choose the primary one
via Edit/Categories/Assign Categories window. It has a "Make Primary" box at
the bottom.)

Now you can use all the new Task Views exactly as you used subfolders in
Outlook. Just click on each one and you'll see only the tasks for that view
(category). There's even the advantage that the full Tasks List shows you
all at once, without having to copy the tasks from subfolder to main folder
as in Outlook.

personally, I don't see any reason for making a feature request for "task
folders". Task Views work exactly the same way. You just have to get used to
assigning the category (which is very easy) rather than the location for
making a new task. (You can male a new task from anywhere via
File/New/Task).

Paul -

I did think about that but can you drag and drop into a custom view as
you would with a folder normally in outlook or finder? The folder
metaphor is indigenous to the Mac world too I would assume.

BTW - the drop down list in entourage is a bit clunky since the text is
quite smallish and i find myself misclicking quite often. i do,
however, love the category and other flexible features of entourage
that are way ahead of outlook including the project center. the problem
is that entourage seems to be an island of innovation in a world of
primitive exchange servers for outlook (in some ways).

Thanks for the response though and I will see how views work for me.
Now that I think about it, one physical repository manipulated with
views may actually be a more robust way to work with tasks (and
emails).

I think a best practive guide is called for in using entourage. One
thing I realize the potential of but have not yet figured out how to
exploit in my workflow is Project Center.

Thanks
