Does Entourage 2004 use a LAST command with pop servers?

This is only indirectly an Entourage issue, but I¹m hoping it¹s close enough
for the group.

When I check my hosted domain (hosted by ValueWeb) pop server with Entourage
(or Eudora), I receive only new messages, as we all would expect.

When traveling, though, and not on a good connection, I often use a Yahoo
account to check the same server. It invariably downloads all messages in
the mail account, read or unread. When I try to select ³new messages only,²
I get a message saying that the server does not support the LAST command and
I need to uncheck the ³new message only² option.

I figure that Entourage must use some other command? Anyone know which one?

Has anyone else ever bumped up against anything similar. Aid? Comfort?
Advice?

Thanks!

Best,

- Bill

I think that would be the UIDL command which gives an unique id for each
message. Entourage saves the UIDL of each downloaded message and knows that
way which ones have been downloaded. I think LAST is an extension to the
SMTP protocol. The UIDL is unique for all messages, it's a hash of the
message using some hash function.

Thanks very much.

I need to confess that I was really trying to figure out what to do about a
problem with my domain hosting service. Their POP server does not apparently
recognize the LAST command, which is what Yahoo uses to ³Check new messages
only.² Without it, I am doomed to receive every message on my server every
time I check mail on Yahoo while traveling (use it when I cannot get a good
internet connection to use Eudora).

Since posting this, I have checked with my provider, and they admit they do
not recognize LAST. I have asked if it is something they can add, and they
are supposed to be getting back to me about it. I have decided not to hold
my breath, but it is good of them to consider it at least.

For my part, I am considering changing hosting companies.
