I have multiple email accounts. One is a gmail (POP) account. I can send mail from it and a copy of the mail is in the sent folder. But the account does not appear among my accounts on the left. I cannot see any received mail. The other accounts work fine.

You don't see POP accounts in the folder window. POP mail goes to any folder
"On My Computer."

Unless you have a rule, the mail should all go to the Inbox.

Do a custom mail view:

Date Received Today

Account is (select your gmail pop account from the popup)

In preview pane below you can add the folder column under View --> Columns
if it not showing. This way you can find the folder the mail is being
routed.

If it's not in the Inbox, them you most likely have a Mailing List Manager
rule that is moving the mail. A likely folder is the Deleted Items folder.

In Entourage go to Tools --> Accounts... and double-click your POP
account. Under the Options tab select "Allow online access (shows
account in folder list)".

Hope this helps!
