Don't automatically overwrite heading outline levels from a custo.

Using Word 2003 and Word 2007 Beta.

If one tries to modify the Heading1-9 levels from a Normal.dot, they are
ignored immidiately. We've even tried manually editing the <w:eek:utlinelvl>
under each <w:style> in wordML, as well as in the styles.xml part of
Normal.dotx (for the new Office 2007 formats). There's nothing that can be
done to prevent Word from overwriting the Heading levels back to default.

Our company publishes books that are very strictly formatted, and for
consistency it's important that our heading styles match those of other
departments (not using Word) - this means changing Heading1's outline level
to 3, since there are other heading elements (H1,H2) that should be levels 1
and 2.

We would like full ability to customize Normal.dot, without fear of Word
mangling it due to some hardcode when it is opened.

And while you're at it, we'd also like a DTD or schema-enforced editing mode.

Don't be messing with normal.dot. Create appropriate heading styles in a
custom template and have your users use that template. Doing workable solid
outline numbering in Word is not intuitive and is not taught in the help
system or most books. See: How to create numbered headings or outline
numbering in your Word document
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. (For
bullets see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html, the
subject is related.)
