doubleclick doesn't open attachment in draft email

I am running Tiger 10.4.11 on an Intel Dual Core iMac, with Office 2008.

Sometimes I want to check a word document I have already attached to a currently-being-written email -- to be sure edits that I have done on the document are in fact there. Double clicking does not open it. Do I have to delete it and reattach it to be sure the latest version is being sent?
