Download pictures option?

Is there a way to set the preferences in Entourage to automatically download
pictures that are included in an email? I don't like having to do an extra
click on each message where I want to see them. The need for an extra click
strikes me as a poor default choice because you never know whether the
picture adds something to the email or is just an advertisement. So I
usually end up clicking on the the "download pictures" button.
TIA Mike

A new security feature in Entourage 2004 blocks the display of pictures (and
other linked mail content) hosted on remote sites. Images can be loaded for
individual messages by clicking on the ŒDownload Pictures¹ link in the
yellow message status bar. This was a huge feature request from users that
found the all embracing ŒAll Pictures¹ or ŒNo Pictures¹ too limiting.

There is a setting in the security section of the preferences to
automatically download pictures from recipients who are in your address
book. That should suffice for most users. If you really want to download all
images from all sources, you can put ".com", ".net", ".org" etc to your list
of safe domains in the Junk Mail Protection dialog. Then, images from all
untrustworthy sources will be downloaded.

Mike,

This was answered here a few days/weeks ago, but since linking to replies is
problematic, here is a copy of a reply from Michel Bintener from that post:

images is meant to protect your privacy, to prevent spammers from knowing
that your account is active. However, Entourage displays messages
completely, i.e. without asking you to download the pictures, if the sender
is in your address book. While this works quite well for real persons, I
realise that you probably don't want to add addresses like the one Apple
uses for the iTunes newsletter to your address book. That's why there's a
white list in Entourage. Go to Tools>Junk E-Mail Protection, and choose
"Safe Domains". In the field that shows up, you can add domain names that
you know to be safe, such as itunes.com, and Entourage will from that moment
on automatically download entire messages coming from that e-mail account.
If you don't want Entourage to protect you at all, add ".net", ".org" and
".com" (without the quotation marks) to the white list, and nearly every
single e-mail should be displayed in its entirety. I wouldn't recommend
this, however, spam can be a real problem.

-Mark

Thanks to Mark and Barry for the solution. Now.. I am curious about this

How does that work? Does the display of images really allow spammers to know
that the account is active? How do they know? TIA

Because each image is named slightly difference, and they keep a log of
which image name was assigned to which email address. Their server logs tell
them which image was retrieved, and they can then look up which email
address that image address was sent to.

Thanks Barry,
That was a very informative answer and certainly justifies the inclusion of
this feature in Entourage. Thank you to Microsoft for including it.
