downloading files via link

J

JethroUK©

by default - links to files [open] recognised file types (word, excel,
access, etc)

is there anyway the link can 'download' these files instead

i've tried all different link prefixes (types), but they all want to open
these document types instead of download them

i realise the end user can right-click to download (but the end users will
be level1 students, some using computers for the very first time & not
learning web page, hence i would prefer to build it into the link myself - i
have enough on, teaching them what to do with it once they have it )

The easiest way I can think of would be
to make them Winzip "self extracting" files
which creates a file with the .exe extension.
This will force a download. They then
double click the exe file which extracts /
creates the original file you "zipped."

Is there a reason that you don't think it would be a good idea to teach
student how to right click on a link to download, etc?

In reference to your question about forcing a download, it requires
server-side scripting written in ASP, PHP, etc. depending on what is
supported on your web host.

In the IE address bar type the following:

? Forcing a file download

sounds so straight forward doesn't it )

told class of beginners on day 1 to rename a file using right-click menu (an
emergency i regretted it to this day)

it flew right over their head - i promised them i would never mention
right-click ever again (until they start level1 IT) - they are now on day 15
( 500+ clicks later), and every single time i say "click" - 4 or 5 of them
still say "left or right click" - grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

i'm just trying to make it as simple as possible for them to use online
resources (which is not the subject of the lessons - but it's gonna have to
be) - looks like i have no alternative here (scripting is beyond me) -
thanks very much

Self-extractos can be problematic in that they are .exe files, and sometimes
the viewer's anti-virus software will report viruses in them when there
aren't any. I have had this problem. Maybe better to let people get a copy
of WinZip and do their own extracting. Problem is it isn't free like the old
PKZip.

Users of Windows ME and XP have the ability to create/open .zip without the
purchase of any software.

main site only keep current versions as per winzip (winrar 3.20 to date (or
3.30 beta)) - you can get older versions free if you scour the web - i have
3 prior versions (3.11 being my most current freebie)
