Drop down lists

Does anyone know a way of using a dropdown box/picklist which can show an abbreviation of the data when selected? For example, the list might contain entries such 'Television, Video Recorder and computer' but when selected you can choose to show 'TV, VCR or PC', allowing the column to be thinner

and look for Data Validation "Columns"

This shows how to select an itemt which is automatically changed to the
value in the adjacent column
