I'm an Outlook Express user (Windows XP SP2).
Everytime I receive a mail with an image from a Mac user with Entourage,
the attached JPEG file is duplicated. I receive TWO files (same name,
different size): one is unreadable and the other doesn't show in the
received mail (it must be opened in a graphic software).
Does anobody know how to correct this problem on the Mac? I want to help
this Mac user.
Get your friend to go to Entourage/Preferences/Compose, and under
"Attachments" check "Append file name extensions". Then the "good" file will
be double-clickable by you in your email client without saving to disk and
opening in a graphic software. (Actually it opens in the graphic software
just the same, but Windows knows which software to use by itself.) Here's
the explanation:
There's nothing too wrong on the Mac. Just ignore the file that is
"unreadable". On the Mac, files traditionally have had two "forks" - a data
fork and a resource fork. This was very useful, but in our new operating
system is no longer necessary so you won't always see this any more. But
still quite frequently. The resource fork contains important "meta-data"
about the file, helps determine which application opens it, what icon
displays etc.
In email, when someone sends an attachment in "AppleDouble" encoding, which
is the default in Entourage, the file is split into its separate data and
resource forks, and is sent as two files. When the recipient is on a Mac,
the Mac understands and puts the two back together. When the recipient is on
Windows, Windows doesn't know what to do with the resource fork file. If the
sender did not include the file extension (.jpg), Windows does not know what
type of file it is nor which application to use to open it.
Another thing your friend could do would be - when sending messages to you
or other Windows recipients - to click the long button at the bottom of the
Attachments pane of the message, the one that says "Encode for any computer
(AppleDouble)", and change the encoding to "Windows (MIME/base64)". Then you
won't see the second "unreadable" file (the resource fork) which you don't
need on Windows.
In fact your friend could even change that same setting back in
Entourage/Preferences/Compose. Then the attachments would always go out as
for Windows computers. But if he has any recipients who are still using the
older Mac operating system (OS 8 or 9), _they_ may not be able to open
attachments. That's why AppleDouble is best, as long as he always appends
Windows file extensions. Then everyone can open the attachments, and you can
just stop worrying about the second file.
