Duplicate index entries display with comma

We use a combination of Word 2000 and Word2003. We use a bit of code to allow users to insert index and create them. (very simple text index entry : {xe "Test Index" \t} ). The index would then have a list of references used, but with no pages. Word 2000 used to put fullstops at the end (I gather that was to do with page numbers). The macro would look for fullstop+paragraph return and replace them with paragraph return

With Word 2003, duplicate entries are shown in the index as : Test Index.,,, (commas indicating however duplicate entries you have). Is there a setting to not include duplicate entries?
