Duplicate Messages

I upgraded to Office 2004 today. My main email address gets duplicate
messages every time I down load. My other accounts only download one
message, but the main one gets them twice.

Any thoughts? It did not do this before the upgrade -Lorene

I have also received duplicates, and in a few cases up to 10 copies. It seems
to only happen with my hotmail account through Entourage though.

I have had exactly the same problem since upgrading to Office 2004 ---
having never had the problem previously. In fact, I am now regularly
getting 3 or 4 copies of the same message (after it started out only
giving me duplicates). My problem is only occurring with one of my
accounts, that being my internal (company) email account.

I have been advised to try a 'database rebuild' to see if this corrects
the problem (start Entourage while holding down the Option key). I am
in the midst of that now so I don't know if it is going to work. I will
say that it checked for any corruption of my database and it didn't find
any. Nonetheless, I am going ahead with the rebuild to see if it helps.

I will post my results when I have completed it.

OK, here is an update on my experience:

When I opened the 'Database Utility' (by holding the 'Option' key while
opening Entourage), I did two things. First, I chose 'Verify Database
Integrity'. It took a while, but came back telling me, essentially,
that all was well. I then chose the option 'Compact Database', which it
did (although it takes f o r e v e r; don't do it unless you have a lot
of time on your hands). It completed that task without a problem. I
then decided to NOT do the next step, which is to 'Rebuild Database',
not wishing to further complicate matters at this moment (as I'm heading
for a big trip and don't want to create problems just before leaving).

What I DID do, however, was quit the Utility program and open Entourage.
Guess what? So far, no duplicate messages...at all. Perhaps this is a
temporary cure, perhaps not. In any event, the problem has disappeared
for now, so I can get on with things.

Good luck.

One thing that will contribute to duplicate messages is your account
settings (how Entourage handles messages on the server).

When you connect to your account (IMAP,POP; exchange doesn't apply
here), you have the option of downloading (removing) the message from
the server, or simply making a local copy (leaving the original on the
server to be accessed from, say, a home computer). When you leave a
copy on the server, Entourage keeps track of what messages have already
been downloaded, and which have not (it compares what's already in your
database to that of the server).

If you apply rules to your local messages (say, move any message where
the subject is XP3 Ultra to the Fascinations folder), then Entourage
may not remember that a message has already been copied to your inbox,
thus creating a duplicate. This has happened when I've moved messages,
then deleted them from a new folder.

If you don't need to access the same message on multiple computers,
then I'd recommend turning off the "leave copy on server" option.

A further -- and last? -- update.

My actions utilizing some of the functions of the Database Utility
(described above) did not work; the duplicates disappeared for a while
but then returned. I was left with no choice but to Rebuild Database.
I have done so and -- after one hour of use -- the results are:
* no new duplicates received.
* all prior duplicates have disappeared from my folder(s).

If you don't get another posting from me, assume that it continues
operating without problems.

Good luck.
