Duplicates in Outlook 2003

Randy

I recently reformatted my hard drive (WinXP Pro + Office
2003) I copied & pasted my old .pst files from Outlook
2002 and some strange (minor) things are happening:

1) I have 2 identical sets of "Personal Folders"
displayed along the right side of Outlook 2003. Why and
how do I get it down to 1 set? I reviewed some posts in
this newsgroup talking about creating a new profile. I
could not find out how to do that in Outlook.

2) When I try to send an email & click on the "To, cc, or
bcc" buttons to fill in an address, it gives me
2 "contacts" lists to choose from in the "Show Names from
the" drop down arrow. However, one of them is blank.
How do I delete the blank one and make it bring up the
correct one automatically every time?

1) Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles...

2) most likely because you haven't done 1) yet ;-)

No, if you go to 1) you can delete the profile and create a new one.

Why do you insist on importing? There is absolutely no need to do so when
you create a new profile. That's what's causing your problem. Just use your
previous PST in the new profile.

I tried it w/o importing anything. It created a new .pst
file. I then changed the path to use my 45K+ .pst file,
and it brought up the 2 personal folders files, as in my
original problem.

Is there any possible way that someone could call me

To use another PST file (such as one from an earlier installation) and set
it to be the default for your current installation of Outlook, you will
first need to know the location and name of the PST file you'd like to use
as your new default. Then use the following directions:

- Go to Tools > Options > Mail Setup > Data Files > Add...
- Add the PST you'd like as your new default, then Close > OK to exit the
Options dialog
- Go to Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change existing e-mail accounts
- Select the PST you just added in the "Deliver New e-mail to the following
location" dropdown (it will most likely appear just below the current
default Personal Folders file) > Finish
- Exit and Restart Outlook
- You can now close the previous default PST (R-click on that pst folder
while in Folder View and select "Close <foldername> Folders"). If you have
any information in your former PST that you'd like to transfer to your new
default PST, you can drag and drop from one to the other before you close
the old one.

Now, one last thing...
When I dragged my calendar folder into the newly created
calendar folder, it created a folder "Calendar" and a
subfolder "Calendar". The main Calendar folder, of
course, has no appointments, but it will not let me
delete it. The subfolder "calendar" has all of my future
appointments in it. OL will allow me to delete it, but if
I do that, I will lose all of my appointments, right?

How do I resolve this?

Switch your Calendar view to a list view (like by Category). Now you can
easily select all of your calendar items and drag & drop them in the default
Calendar folder. If the move has been completed check if it has been
succesful and delete the Calendar subfolder.

I recently reformatted my hard drive (WinXP Pro
+
Office
2003) I copied & pasted my old .pst files from
Outlook
2002 and some strange (minor) things are
happening:

1) I have 2 identical sets of "Personal
Folders"
displayed along the right side of Outlook 2003.
Why
and
how do I get it down to 1 set? I reviewed some
posts
in
this newsgroup talking about creating a new
profile.
I
could not find out how to do that in Outlook.

2) When I try to send an email & click on
the "To,
cc,
or
bcc" buttons to fill in an address, it gives me
2 "contacts" lists to choose from in the "Show
Names
from
the" drop down arrow. However, one of them is
blank.
How do I delete the blank one and make it
bring up
the
correct one automatically every time?

Switch your Calendar view to a list view (like by Category). Now you can
easily select all of your calendar items and drag & drop them in the default
Calendar folder. If the move has been completed check if it has been
succesful and delete the Calendar subfolder.

P.S. You guys are great!!!:)

I got all that and transferred the folders. Now, when I
right click on the old Personal Folders, and click on
Close Personal Folders, it says "The operation
failed.
An
object could not be found."

What now?

To use another PST file (such as one from an earlier
installation) and set
it to be the default for your current installation of
Outlook, you will
first need to know the location and name of the PST file
you'd like to use
as your new default. Then use the following directions:

- Go to Tools > Options > Mail Setup > Data Files >
Add...
- Add the PST you'd like as your new default, then Close
OK to exit the
Options dialog
- Go to Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change
existing e-mail accounts
- Select the PST you just added in the "Deliver New e-
mail to the following
location" dropdown (it will most likely appear just
below the current
default Personal Folders file) > Finish
- Exit and Restart Outlook
- You can now close the previous default PST (R-
click
on
that pst folder
while in Folder View and select "Close <foldername>
Folders"). If you have
any information in your former PST that you'd like to
transfer to your new
default PST, you can drag and drop from one to the other
before you close
the old one.

I tried it w/o importing anything. It created a
new .pst
file. I then changed the path to use my 45K+ .pst file,
and it brought up the 2 personal folders files, as in
my
original problem.

Is there any possible way that someone could call me
(toll-free) and explain to me what I am doing wrong? My
number is 866-776-2551.

Why do you insist on importing? There is absolutely no
need to do so when
you create a new profile. That's what's causing your
problem. Just use your
previous PST in the new profile.
