DVD to Powerpoint

A friend sent me the following question, and I need an answer as I know
absolutely nothing about DVD's. Thanks for any help.

"Some old family movies have been put on VCR. Now my sister is getting them
put on DVD. I want to get the DVD and capture some stills off of it to put
in a Power Point presentation. Do you know if that is possible."

I would work this way. Play the VCR and capture the output on a digital videocamera. Use a video program to put the captured footage on your PC (or directly capture the VCR in your PC).
Every video program has a possibility to save any frame as a mbp of jpg to disk. Those stills can be imported in Powerpoint.

If I had to do this, I would probably do the following...

1. Rip the DVD to the computer. You'll need a utility to do this, but they're pretty inexpensive. http://www.imtoo.com/dvd-ripper.html is one I've used, and it seemed to work pretty well. Anyway, rip the DVD to the hard drive as an MPEG.

2. Open the MPEG in some video editing software. Here at home, I use Sonic Foundry's Video Factory 2.0, as it does everything I need. Sony has since purchased the Sonic Foundry products, and I think their version of Video Factory is Screenblast Movie Studio. http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/products/screenblastfamily.asp (You can probably use even Movie Maker for Windows, though.)

3. Use the video editing software to extract the still. In my software, there's a save icon which offers the option of saving as either JPG or PNG.

4. Open PPT and use Insert/Picture/From File to insert the still images.
