E-mail attachments not going through to recipients

When I send attachments to recipients in my Outlook 2000, they receive the e-mail but no attachment. Only my signature file is sent, which goes through as a .dat file. My message header does not include a box labeled "Attachments". I have to go to Insert, File Attachments or use the shortcut key to attach a file. Does anyone have any suggestions?
