E/S error -36

This is what Entourage (2001) tells me every time I try to retrieve mail
from one of my POP accounts (not the other one).

I already run DiskWarrior and Disk Utility. When I tried to rebuild the
database it stops at a certain point saying there is an E/S error, and do
I want to do an Advanced Rebuild.

And when I tried to reinstall Entourage from the CD, it either does not
reinstall it saying it is there already, or, when I take the original out of
the folder it does Install the program but then it doesn't work.

I think I have exhausted my possibilities and don't have any idea of
what E/S or error -36 is, and haven't been able to find anything on
them.

Thanks for any input,

Ramiro

I forgot to give my specifications:

G3 iBook, 800 MHs*, 384 MB RAM
OS 10.2.8

* I can't write the last letter of the alphabet because Safari will tell me it
can't resise the window, and then it closes it.

What size if your database?

I'm wondering if you have enough space on your drive. You need enough hard
disk space available for twice the size of your db. As part of the
rebuilding process, Entourage creates a second database file. This needs to
be contiguous space.

You could check for corrupt preferences. Move the 'Microsoft' folder out of
your local preferences folder and try again. If that doesn't work, just move
it back and replace.

You might need to trim down your db for the rebuild. See our database page
for options on reducing.

And when I tried to reinstall Entourage from the CD, it either does not
reinstall it saying it is there already, or, when I take the original out of
the folder it does Install the program but then it doesn't work.

I doubt this is your problem, but if you ever need to reinstall....

Use Remove Office. Do not use the Remover available on the 2001 CD; it isn't
current. Download the Office 2001 Remover from Mactopia."

We have some errors listed on the error page, but not this one. Often errors
close in number have similar fixes.

Let me know how this goes.

I'm not sure. The only thing I could find was the Entourage (identified
only by its icon) Database Daemon, located in the Office folder inside
the Microsoft Office X folder inside the Applications folder, and it's 716
KB.

I have 8.7 GB free space in the drive. Should be enough.

I did it, and it didn't work. Replace what?

I went there but couldn't see any reference or link. I suppose I would
have to use the Search function.

I'm pretty sure now it's an I/O error, as I'm using the Spanish version of
Entourage, i.e., Entrada/Salida. Still that doesn't tell me much. And the
fact that my other adress (at another server) is unaffected makes the
issue even more mysterious. Still, Entourage is taking an inordinately
long time to start up.

Let me know how this goes.

Definitely.

Thank you very much for all your time and effort.

Dianne:

I have already discovered a few more things:

1- I found what seems to be the database you were referring to. It's in
the Main Identities folder of Microsoft User Data folder of Documents.
And it's 73 MB.

2- I tried to do the database Advanced Rebuild, and it also stops at
about the 3700th file (of 6000), telling me there is an I/O error and
that the database may not be fixable.

3- I did a search in Mactopia for "Office 2001 Remover" and came up
with nothing.

4- I understand now what you meant by 'replace'. Entourage creates a
new preferences file, and that's the one to be replaced by the old one
taken out before.

So I guess I'm just going to have to remove Office with the Disk
Remover.

I'll keep you updated.
