easy excel Q?: how to prevent automatic formula reference shift?

Hello,

I think this is probably an easy question for advanced or
expert users. How do I monitor a formula so that it
doesn't automatically shift it's initial reference when I
copy the formula across rows or columns. For example,
when I use the rank formula, I want the range of cells to
stay the same.
