Editing presentation with compressed pictures

I am having a problem with a presentation containing
compressed pictures. Once the pictures have been
compressed using the Powerpoint tool and the presentation
has been saved, if additional pictures are then added to
the presentation Powerpoint crashes.

I have a workaround, but perhaps someone can help.

We are using Windows XP and Powerpoint 2003.

I hope someone can shed some light on this for me!
