I am trying to add a column of time. It should be simple but I cannot get it
to work.

Thanks,
Patti

Times are stored by XL as fractional days, so you can simply add them,
or use the SUM() function.

By default, displayed times roll over at 24 hours. To prevent that,
choose Format/Cell/Number/Custom and enter

[h]:mm:ss

in the format box.

I've tried both of those things and it doesn't seem to work. Sometimes it
will give me a total but the total is not correct.

Thanks

I put =TIME() in every cell. Why does Excel think it is text? And how do I
change it?

This is just a column of hours that I am trying to sum.

Thanks,

Patti

Why do you put TIME there? One way although you might have to reformat as
times again hh:mm or something like that

copy an empty cell, select the time range, do edit>paste special and select
add
also when totalling the time use [hh]:mm as format or it will start over
after 24 hours (meaning 30:00 will display as 06:00)
