I have tried all the tips etc on powerpoint presentations and going to save
as so that they open to the slideshow and not to the edit mode. I have tried
saving as a pps but then the file is called pps.ppt. I NEED to get this
working so I can email this out VERY soon....I have windows xp does this have
any known problems with the slideshow program.I have also seen people say to
save it as a powerpoint show in the save as selection box but I don't have
this option. HELP!!!

You can save your presentation as a slideshow, and PowerPoint will put the .pps
extension on the presentation, or you can through Explorer rename your
presentation from .ppt to .pps and say yes to the query message asking if you
really want to do that.

Two ways of saving as a PPS:

1. change extension in Windows Explorer from .ppt to .pps.

2. Do a File, Save as, change the Save as type dropdown to the one that has
"*.pps" in the name. Depending on the version of PowerPoint the name might
be slightly different (not sure since I don't have older versions on my
computer), but there is one that says something like "PowerPoint Show
(*.pps)". You will, however, have to scroll down the list of options to
find it.

Holler back if #2 does not work.

What Bill said should work for you. Also, you might want to set Windows
to view extensions, or rather to not hide extensions for know file types.
To do this open up a window on your computer (just double-clicking on My
Computer is fine). Choose Folder Options from the Tools menu. Click on
the View tab. Uncheck the box next to "Hide extensions for known file
types." Click OK. From now on, you will see the three letter extensions
on the ends of all your file names. For example, Word documents will end
in .doc, PowerPoint will end in .ppt, pictures will end in .jpg or .gif
or something else. It will take a little getting used to, but it will
prevent numerous problems like what you are experiencing because these
extensions are part of the file name, whether or not they are showing.

Now, you will always be able to see the real file name, and you will be
able to use Bill's method number 1 to change the extension. If you don't
see the extensions, using Bill's method #1 will result in the problem you
encountered.

Finally, if you tried Bill's method #2, you might get the .pps.ppt result
if you just tacked .pps onto the name of the file (during Save As within
PowerPoint) without changing the Save as file type to PowerPoint Show.

Lisa,

Thank you so much for getting back to us that our advice helped. Given
that we are all volunteers here, our only pay is the thanks we get. You
have brightened my day.

When saving, for file name do NOT type the extension.
As file type choose pps.
The extension will be automatically added to the file name.
