when I open Entourage the mail window is blank and I get ' Could not open that feature. mail error.' Other features such as addressees are fine. I thought rebuilding the database might help but when i try to start Entourage with the option key down, after prompting me to turn office notifications on it tells me ' Could not open that feature.'
help please

Try rebuilding the database. In Entourage X, first go to Entourage > Turn
Off Office Notifications. Now, quit Entourage, and then restart Entourage
holding down the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog box comes up, choose
to do a Typical Rebuild. If that does not fix the problem, repeat the
procedure, instead opting to do the Advanced Rebuild.

thanks for that.
I've tried to do that and it starts to rebulid but each time fails, with the error message that I don't have enough disk space. Since I have 17 GB free I don't understand that. Is there any point in going straight to Advanced rebuild?

³Could not open that feature² usually means means that the database daemon
has crashed or been quit.

Open the Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder. You should have only one
Microsoft Database daemon. Quit all. In addition, check System Preferences
--> Accounts --> Login Items and make sure there is only one Microsoft
Database daemon. Delete all if more than one. Entourage will create a new
one when launched.

There is also a preference file that you should delete in your User's -->
Library Preferences:

com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist

rebuild?

It's possible that the disk space you have is too fragmented to use and that
it leaves you with too little free space. During a rebuild, Entourage
creates a copy. This means you need double the space to rebuild. The system
needs a minimum of 10% for virtual memory.

Other options to check:

* Bad RAM.
* Being low on disk space. To check your disk space, use the Activity
Monitor. Click on Disk Usage in the bottom menu bar and select the volume
where you have Office installed. You can also use Disk Utility to see
detailed information about a disk or volume. To learn more, open Disk
Utility in the /Applications/Utilities folder and refer to Disk Utility
Help.

The message may very well be accurate. How big is your *Database* file?
Look somewhere within your home folder ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/...

Ideally, you'll want at least twice the amount of free space as the size
of your Database file.

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys,
Diane, I couldn't find ANY Microsoft Database daemon in either off those places, although I have found and deleted that preference file. as far as Disk usage goes I have 35.50 GB used and 17.27 available.
will check out bad RAM

Bill, the database file is 3.4GB. incidentally I have an old database file, from a previous rebuild, at 3.67GB - it is presumably safe to dump that (and the associated cache file)?

Yes, once you have done a rebuild, you can trash the old file once you are
satisfied that yo have a working database.

I would run the latest Tiger combo too. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.
