Emails being put in delete folder that don't belong there.

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel
Email Client: pop

I'm new to Mac, recovering pcite, and Entourage. I'm not finding it terrifically intuitive. I must have a setting wrong in my mail. I was told that I had been sent some important emails. I checked, not in my inbox. I found them in the delete folder. What have I done? Better yet, what do I need to undo/do? Please and Thank You to any assistance.

I have an Imac OS X (10.5.2). Found something in Mailing List manager
that, I think, was the problem. I deleted the item in List Manager and the
problem is gone. So it is quite apparent that I have a bit to learn about
this. Thanks.
