Emails in Outbox

Hi

Wondering if someone could answer a question relating to
Outlook 2000. When sending emails sometimes, (when it
happens it happens alot, then dies down) they stay in my
outbox and I have to open them from the outbox and press
send when they eventually go.

Why does this happen and what can I do to avoid having to
resend them?
