Empty cells in Excel seem to contain a value. How to make them re.

In cells with text ("x"), made empty bij "SEARCH/REPLACE" remains a code
which is seen bij functions IF and COUNT (...? the counting function for
numbers, not text. I've got a Dutch version of Excel, so I don't know the
right name) as a number. How can I make these cells really empty, to get the
IF-function etc. working properly.
An apostrophe may remain is the cells after "SEARCH/REPLACE", which I cannot
replace. But there are also really empty cells (in the cell window above the
screen) which still appear to contain a value.
(DELETE works, but is impractical for many thousand cells, spread over the
sheet)
Thanks for your hints.

Hi
what have you entered in the 'Replace' textbox. You have to leave this
box completely empty (don't enter a Space for example)
