Empty deleted items O2003

The "empty deleted items folder upon exiting" command as well as the "warn
before permanently deleting" command have mysteriously stopped functioning
after performing properly for the first day after installing Outlook 2003. I
checked, unchecked and rechecked the proper settings under
Tools-Option-Other-General to no avail.

The command "empty deleted items folder" performed manually from the Tools
menu operates normally.
