Ent '04: Relative dates don't clear?

Using Entourage 2004, quickly tired of the relative dates inserted into my
lists of mail/messages. Maybe it's useful, but I'm not used to it and it
slows me down. Went into preferences and unchecked the box that says use
relative dates... And they're still showing up.

I've gone through and checked my main identity for errors, and even rebuilt
the database anyway. Still showing up.

What am I missing?

That setting will clear the relative dates from the columns showing time
received/sent, but does not affect the display of dates in 'group' headings.
