Ent 2004/Internet Connect issues? HELP!

S

Simon Riches

I upgraded to Office 2004 late last year and had no problems whatsoever
until a few weeks ago when Entourage started generating Internet Connect
error messages. Whenever I click Send & Receive I get an error message with
the purple Internet Connect icon (and the title Internet Connect) that reads
"Could not open the communication device". There is no problem with my
connection (DSL) and I genuinely can't remember doing anything on the
computer that might have provoked Entourage going all weird on me.
I have tried installing an office update that I downloaded as I thought it
may fix the issue but it refuses to work - I know others who have also had
problems getting the update to work.

Can anyone help? I've had to switch back to Entourage X and it's driving me
crazy!

Many many many thanks in advance.

Internet Connect should not normally be getting involved at all if you're
not using dialup PPP. Check your System Preferences/Network/Network Port
Configurations. Drag the Ethernet item to the top, and you're probably best
turning Internal Modem off completely.

I think you must have Entourage set to connect from some schedule, and
there's something in System Prefs trying to use the Modem. In Entourage
Schedules like Send-and-Receive, have all "dial-up options" set to "Stay
Connected". It shouldn't really make any difference for DSL (which should
ignore these options), but maybe the Modem is trying to Disconnect and can't
because it's not connected in the first place.

I had wondered about the Network preference panel before.. Had all my ports
turned off except my USB DSL modem and my bluetooth dongle (which I just
tried turning off). I do indeed have a simple schedule to automatically
check my email every 15 minutes but it, along with the others, were all set
to stay connected like you said.
I'm at a bit of a loss really. I tried uninstalling office and starting from
scratch (having exported my contacts and emails for safekeeping) but it
didn't help.
