enter key doesn't go to next line

In Word, I have a Heading2 with nothing after it before the next section.
When I hit enter, a space appears. Only after I start typing does the cursor
move to the new line. This also happens if I'm in Bullet mode. The bullet
also doesn't appear until I start typing in the text.

I would like to remove this behavior!

Which version of Word is this? Which View are you working in?

Do you have non-printing characters displayed? If not, go to Tools/Options/View
and make sure all the non-printing character checkboxes are activated. Now, can
you describe what appears besides the text in these trouble-spots?
