Entering text into a grid

I have Word 2000 for the Mac and after creating a grid I would like to enter
text into individual sqiares of the grid. How is this done?

Suzanne S. Barnhill was kind to reply and advised that this can be done with
a bordered table.
I'm sure there are only a few steps to accomplish this, but the person doing
the work is a senior citizen and needs step by step instructions. Would you
be so kind as to post the steps, as clearly and simply as possible? Thanks
you very much.

My suggestion is to create the grid as a table, applying the default 3/4
point border to all the lines in the table. Set the column width and row
height to the desired grid interval. Text can be typed in each cell of the
table. You may want to set the internal margins to 0" if the cells are quite
small. It sounds as if you're doing this to create a crossword puzzle or
something of the sort. I have used tables for this application and, while
there are dedicated apps for creating crosswords, a table in Word can be
adapted quite well for this purpose.
