Entourage 10.1.4 - token support, not usable

P

This is simply a feature check box patch, there's little usable
support for exchange. I work in a company of 1900+ employees using
Exchange. I have set up outlook 2001 on the mac as well as multiple
flavours on the PC many many times. I access my email and calendar
through a browser regularly.

I have *never* needed to putz around with free/busy server names,
finding the ldap server, making sure my account is IMAP etc. Why
should I? Does Microsoft *really* think IT departments are going to
help end users do this?

Why is it easier to use Exchange through Safari than it is through
Microsoft's supposed mail client for OS X? I will be returning this
product for a refund - i only bought it for the Exchange support - and
continue to use a browser/term serv solution. Bitterly dissapointed in
this supposed support, it's pathetic.

Hi,
Why is it easier to use Exchange through Safari than it is through
Microsoft's supposed mail client for OS X?

Well, that's a totally different problem. Safari, like other web
browsers, simply has to get to the web page and the rest of what appears
is dealt with by the server which outputs everything in html. Entourage
actually connects to the server, gets the mail, synchs the calendar
etc... on the Mac. The way it works has very little in common.

As for the settings issues, I agree with you: it would be nice if it
were easier. Unfortunately it isn't. I had the choice of not getting my
e-mails at all, continue using Outlook 2001 through Classic or find out
how to set up the app to use our Exchange server. I found out that I had
to enter the information manually and once I was done, everything works
fine. I have to admit I was lucky that our Exchange server already had
IMAP and WebDAV enabled.

Crasmen,
My company has a battalion of super-qualified Microsoft support geeks.
They've read all the docos on this Entourage product and double-checked
everything they can on our enterprise servers. We are in complete
compliance. But some things just do not function:
1. Global Address List returns a server error. The server is found but not
the directory item. We have tried hard coding the IP address and the literal
and absolute directories.
2. Busy/free returns an error. The server cannot be found. We have hard
coded the IP address and directories and and we know they are valid.
3. Public folders continuously update and take control of my computer. I'd
like to disable access to public folders.

The public folder access and access to my scheduling data on the Exchange
servers seems to indicate the connections are all solid.

We've come to the conclusion that Entourage is nothing more than a
hopelessly outdated IMAP client with a few server hooks and a pretty face.

Hiya back,
Hope your skin is thick, you don't seem to be taking this crap personally.

Hi Dbogie,

There nust be something which is not perfectly compliant, otherwise why
would it work just fine for some users and not for you??

Umm, if you're keeping score, the tally around here indicates that only one
in about ten thousand users have successfully gotten this application to
work on their systems. The weird IMAP underpinnings of what should be a
totally tricked out Exchange client are mysteriously immature.

I must say autodetect didn't work for me but I had no problem entering
the address of the server manually.

Yeah. This is a problem. Why doesn't it just work? It just worked in that
junk app "Outlook 2001."

Turn off synch... Not a great option, but that's the only one I can
think of right now.

Some other folks got us fixed up on this one. Finding the obscure and deeply
hidden control for turning off the search for unread messages in all folders
is a mindless pursuit in illogical instruction sets.

Thanks for your help, we're listening and I'm passing everything you guys
have to offer on to our tech staff.

But this application really stinks. (Not a personal attack.)
