Entourage 12.0 Can't Rebuild database

A

aRKay

I just installed the new Office 2008 and so for I am very impressed. It
took longer than expected but everything seems to work. I am still
learning my way around and have only run into only one problem

When I first opened one of the applications, it suggested I rebuild the
data base. I did and it failed twice toward the end of the long rebuild
cycle.

I opened the Microsoft Office 2008 folder and there is no "Microsoft
Database Utility" so I must have been using the Office 2004 Microsoft
Database Utility that is still on the hard drive.

Where is the Microsoft Database Utility located in Office 2008?

My mail seems to work fine but I have no idea how to verify, compress or
rebuild without a 2008 Microsoft Database Utility

I found it buried in another folder. [[[ :) ]]] Going to try to
verify first to see what happens.

It's not looking good for your database :(

I'd try exporting as much 'stuff' out of the database as you can - while you
still can!

'Export' will probably fail, so start dragging folders of mail to the
desktop, where they will create MBOX files. These can be dragged back into a
new identity.

The rebuild utility is actually better, but if the data is really screwed up
then all bets are off. The problem is when you import your database from
2004 into 2008. I'm not sure if Entourage 2008 is just more sensitive to
problems like Leopard is to certain functions, or if the import and update
process screwed things up.

I would go back to Entourage 2004. Export as data as Entourage archive. Then
quit Entourage 2004, open Entourage 2008 and import the archive file. This
should give you no problems. If it does then you would need to go the MBOX
route.

How to manually move your data from one version to another:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/manaul_update.html>

Moving to Entourage 2008 is much like moving to Leopard, sometimes a fresh
start is the best way.

Diane,

The problem is 2004 and 2008 share the same database and they both work
great. I can rebuild in 2004 but cannot do anything wit the 2008
Microsoft Database Utility. I worry about exporting and from 04 and
importing to 08 to find out I have screwed up the database such that 04
will no longer work.

I wonder if I am the only person having trouble with the 2008 Microsoft
Database Utility?

I have three identities and all three work in 2008 and the addresses are
perfect. The only thing that is hosed is the Microsoft Database Utility
seems to be defective.

I am chicken to start messing with a good database that works.

Barry,

My database works great with either 2004 and 2008. All mail is there
and all addressed are in good shape. I fear tossing the baby out with
the bath water but may try it next week.

They DO NOT SHARE the same database. Each version has it's own Identity
folder:

Office 2004 Identities (database, Mailing Lists, Rules, Signature)
Office 2008 Identities (database, Mailing Lists, Rules, Signature)

When you hold down the Option key when starting it will use the correct
database utility.

Be sure you backup your working 2004 Identity as a safeguard until you get
things working.
