Entourage 2001 won't send to IMAP

Hello,
I am unable to send using my IMAP account since they updated the mail
server. The network guys, who are not mac users, said I have to send using
authentication the same as receiving. I have tried setting the
authentication - checking the box "SMTP server requires authentication" and
"use same settings" and also putting in my username (just user or
user@domain) and password.

The error messages "The SMTP server does not recognize any of the
authentication methods supported by Entourage. To send mail, try disabling
SMTP authentication in the account settings or talk to your administrator."
Mail Error: The server doesn¹t support SMTP authentication.

When I disable authentication, the messages appear to go out, but never
arrive.
Any hints or suggestions?

You can try activating the authentication through SSL. That might do the
trick.

You have one last option if everything else fails. You can activate
SendMail on your mac to use the Mac as an SMTP server.
You could do it youirself but it is VERY tedious. I'd use a shareware
like SendMail enabler.

Thanks for the suggestions. The SSL didn't work, either. Tried it with all
the previous options. Guess this is another good reason to upgrade to OS X.
